Lower Machen Music are pleased to present a special seasonal treat!
Handel’s evergreen and immortal oratorio, Messiah, contains the most unforgettable music to celebrate the birth of Christ and for centuries the work has been an inextricable part of Christmas worship.
It was first performed in Dublin in 1742 and, during Handel’s lifetime, it became associated with charitable Christmas performances at the Foundling Hospital in London. By the end of the century, in Westminster Abbey and during the 19th century in the Crystal Palace, Messiah grew to a gargantuan scale with choirs of 1000 singers and huge orchestras.
What Handel originally intended was somewhat smaller and, with this in mind, we are going to take advantage of our beautiful intimate church at Lower Machen to present a performance of the “Messiah in Minature” with the expert forces of In Spiritu, under the direction of James Davies, with soloists from Wells Cathedral and singers and players from Gwent and Herefordshire. Come and experience this glorious spiritual, festive music and message in a special way and place – the perfect start to Christmas.
Mince pies and mulled wine (included in the ticket price) will be served during the interval.
Tickets can be obtained from Ticketsource at a cost of £22 per person (www.ticketsource.co.uk) or phone 0333 666 3366.)
Some tickets may be available on the door on the night but it is advisable to book tickets if possible.
