The Heritage Hiker’s Guide to Boverton

Boverton

Boverton – Trebefered is a small village in the Vale of Glamorgan to the east of Llantwit Major. The village began as a farming community during the reign of William the Conqueror and largely remains so. It is a sweet little village with a little shop and fish and chip shop at its center. There is evidence that the land here has been in use much longer and this comes in the shape of a Prehistoric flint scatter found in a local field, a Bronze Age Round Barrow and the Boverton Roman coin hoard; a hoard of 38 coins found in 1798 in a quarry.

Robert Fitzhamon is credited with founding the castle known as Boverton Place during the 12th century. The castle was completely rebuilt around 1587 by Roger Seys and was described as an impressive fortified Manor. The Seys family moved out in the late 17th century and it fell into decay over the following century. Local legend states the castle is haunted by the Black Lady described as a tall, shadowy figure dressed in mourning clothes.

The main building structure remains are on private land and access is restricted but they can be viewed at a distance from the stone wall alongside the main road. There is also a small blue plaque on the walls surrounding the site that tells a brief history.

Walks

Section 8 and Section 9 of the Millennium Heritage Trail provide a great way to combine short walks to and from the area and can be combined with other sections to form a longer route or a much longer circular walk.
